Stuart Clark Wins 2016 National Car Rental Carolinas Assistant PGA Professional Championship

Stuart Clark has won the 2016 National Car Rental Carolinas Assistant PGA Professional Championship held this week at River Run Country Club in Davidson, NC. Clark, a PGA apprentice and Teaching Professional at the Steve Dresser Golf Academy in Pawleys Island, SC, carded rounds of 68-74 for a 2-under par total of 142 to finish in a three-way tie for first place. Joining him in a sudden death playoff on the 18th hole were Savio Nazareth, PGA and Anthony Cordes who also finished with 142. Clark made his birdie putt on 18 while Nazareth and Cordes missed theirs, securing him the championship. Along with his victory, Clark earns a spot in the 40th National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship to be held October 27-30 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida later this year. Taking the other four available qualifying spots and joining Clark in Florida will be Savio Nazareth, PGA, Anthony Cordes, Aaron Black, and Barry Pierce, PGA. PGA Golf Club will be hosting its twenty-first consecutive PGA Assistant Championship. The 132-man field for this year's 40th edition of the Assistant PGA Professional Championship consists of the top 4 finishers from last year's championship, if eligible, and assistants based on the average number of players in the last 5 years (using actual number of eligible players starting each Section's Championship). The winner of the 40th National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship earns $9,000 out of a total purse of $100,000. The Champion, if eligible, earns a berth in the 50th PGA Professional Championship, June 25-28, 2017 at Sunriver Resort.  The Carolinas PGA Section would like to thank the PGA Head Golf Professional at River Run Country Club, Chris Hensler, PGA and his staff for hosting a fantastic event on a course that provided a true test for the field. The CPGA also thanks supporting sponsors Kirk & Matz, Ltd. for their contributions to the event and supplying the winner's crystal trophy, and Cleveland Golf, Srixon, and XXIO for their support of the event. 92nd Carolinas Open Champion

Greensboro, NC – Drew Younts of Stokesdale, NC captured the 92nd Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T at Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center by way of a playoff over Thomas Lilly of Newton, NC. Younts, a PGA Apprentice Teaching Professional at Precision Golf School, entered the third and final round with a three stroke lead after two flawless rounds of 68-67 (-9).  The pressure of the final round seemed to change his situation as Younts' game went hot and cold.  He carded five birdies, seven pars, and five bogies en route to a 35-38=73 (+1) for a total of 208 (-8).   Lilly, a college amateur at UNC Wilmington, opened the tournament with a 74, but closed with rounds of 67-67 to also finish at 208 (-8). The duo headed to the 18th hole, a straightaway par-4 with small segmented portions to its green surrounded by hills on all sides providing natural spectator viewing.  Younts and Lilly traded matching pars the first two times through.  Once, Younts almost birdied with a chip shot, but the flagstick rejected his effort.  On the third hole, both competitors hit wild tee shots - Younts to the right and Lilly to the left.  Younts was able to advance his ball to the front left greenside bunker, but Lilly caught a tree with his approach and then hit his wedge to 30 feet.  After carefully examining his shot, Younts nearly holed his 60-foot bunker shot, leaving it two feet away.  As Lilly's par attempt rolled to the hole, the crowd could tell it was going to be close.  However, the line and speed were just off as the ball finished three inches away.  Younts rolled in the winning putt and gave an enthusiastic fist pump to signal his satisfaction with the victory. Of the 147 golfers who competed, 66 survived the 36-hole cut at +6. The 92nd Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T is an official Bob Boyd CPGA Player of the Year Award Presented by OMEGA points event.  Additionally, PGA Professionals' scores count toward the CPGA Johnny Palmer Trophy Presented by True Temper.           View More...
