GIBSON & FROST WIN THE E-Z-GO CPGA PRO-PRO CHAMPIONSHIP

The team of Charles Frost, PGA and Tommy Gibson, representing Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, NC won the 2016 E-Z-GO Carolinas PGA Pro-Pro Championship Presented by Ahead, Global Golf Sales, Stitch Golf, and Tifosi Optics held in historic Pinehurst, NC.

Frost, Old Town’s PGA Head Professional, and Gibson, an Apprentice Assistant Professional, posted rounds of 70-66-60 = 196 (-19) to finish tied with Jeff Avant, the PGA Head Professional at Rolling Hills CC in Monroe, NC, and Larry George, the PGA Head Professional at River Landing CC in Wallace, NC.  That duo earned scores of 66-70-60 = 196 (-19).

Three formats were used for the 54-hole championship on three courses each day.  Both teams happen to have been assigned the same rotation

  -    Pinehurst CC No. 2 /
www.pinehurst.com / Four-Ball Stroke Play (better ball)
   -    Pinewild CC of Pinehurst (Holly) /

The duo played four playoff holes at Pinehurst CC No. 2 using a loop of Holes #18, 1, and 17 where they tied each hole.  After the second time through #18, it was determined that there was not enough daylight left to play another full hole.  The competitors were taken to 140 yards out on the 18th fairway.  Avant and George both bogeyed, and Gibson made a two-foot putt for par and the victory.

(L-R) Champions Tommy Gibson & Charles Frost, PGA

In the senior contest, Donald Padgett, a PGA Life Member and former President and COO of Pinehurst Resort & CC, with Ed Sabo, also a PGA Life Member, were impressive.  With rounds of 68-61-64 = 193 (-22), they finished eight strokes ahead of Ron Schmid, a PGA Life Member, and Karl Kimball, the PGA Director of Golf at Hillandale GC in Durham, NC who recorded scores of 71-62-68 = 201 (-14).

(L-R) Senior contest champions Ed Sabo, PGA & Donald Padgett II, PGA

In addition to three days of competition, the field enjoyed two social functions and a nighttime putting contest.  On the afternoon prior to the tournament, Global Golf Sales conducted its season-ending Par-3 Challenge on Pinewild CC of Pinehurst’s par-3 Azalea course.  The majority of the field qualified through meeting/education attendance, volunteering, growth of the game activities, committee involvement, and tournament participation.  The purse was $10,000 with $9,000 being dedicated to skins on each hole with no carryovers.  Results can be found here.

The CPGA sincerely thanks its title partner E-Z-GO for its continued support of the Pro-Pro Championship.

Greensboro, N.C. Gaines previously assumed the role of resident Tournament Official at Carolinas PGA Headquarters.

Remembering Peggy Kirk Bell

The Carolinas PGA mourns the death of Peggy Kirk Bell, a pioneer in golf and a true legend of the game.  She was a player, teacher, and one of the game’s best ambassadors.  For her numerous contributions she was inducted into the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame in 2013 Mrs. Bell left an indelible mark on the game and will be truly missed.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 29th at 2:00pm at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be held at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines on Monday, November 28th from 6-8pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Fellowship of Christian Athletes or the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour (PKBGT) in Greensboro, NC.  For more information CLICK HERE

For those attending the Carolinas PGA E-Z-GO Pro-Pro Championship, a moment of silence will be observed before the competition begins on Tuesday to honor Mrs. Bell. Discussions were held by CPGA leadership and host staff to determine if any changes to the competition could be made to accommodate those wanting to attend the funeral on Tuesday; however, with over 325 competitors and partners traveling to the event from all parts of the Carolinas, it was deemed too difficult at this late juncture to modify the event.

Please keep Mrs. Bell’s family in your thoughts and prayers as we celebrate her life and numerous accomplishments and contributions to the game of golf.

Carolinas PGA Officers Attend 100th PGA Annual Meeting in NYC

Carolinas PGA President John Marino, Vice President Paige Cribb, Secretary Bob Byrnes and Executive Director Jeff Abbot represented the Section at the 100th PGA of America Annual Meeting in New York City last week.  It was an action packed centennial celebration featuring 50 year PGA member Jack Nicklaus as the keynote speaker.  District 10 Director Rick Murphy’s bid to become the next secretary came up short, as Jim Richerson, the General Manager of Whistling Straits, prevailed over Murphy and North Florida PGA’s Russ Libby.  Highlights included Paul Levy being sworn in as the 40th President, Cary Cozby (Southern Hills CC of Tulsa, OK) receiving the PGA’s Golf Professional of the Year, Carolinas PGA Past National Presidents Gary Schall, Will Mann and Roger Warren leading the Past Presidents Forum and Derek Sprague’s Outgoing Presidents Dinner.  CLICK HERE for more information on the annual meeting.

Rick Murphy's Bid to Become Next PGA Secretary Comes Up Short

Outgoing District 10 Director Rick Murphy’s campaign to become Secretary of the PGA of America came to an end last week at the PGA’s Centennial Annual Meeting in New York City.  It was a hard fought election won by Jim Richerson of the Wisconsin Section over Murphy and Russ Libby of the North Florida PGA.

Murphy issued the following statement after Friday’s election: “I am honored to have been afforded the chance to campaign for PGA of America Secretary in the PGA’s Centennial Year. The opportunity to run alongside candidates like Russ Libby and Jim Richerson was a truly humbling and insightful experience. I congratulate Jim and look forward to the future as we work together to grow this great game while serving our members. I will continue to share my knowledge and expertise from my experience as a PGA District Director,  Carolinas PGA Board Member, PGA Teaching Professional, business owner and mentor for golfers young and old as I strive to make the most beneficial and positive contributions to the sport we all know and love. Let this serve as a reminder to all of my PGA friends, family and colleagues that, no matter how you serve your association, your local golf community, or the industry as a whole, your commitment to the game of golf is appreciated, valued and makes a difference.  Thank you all for your support and efforts to join me on this journey.”

Murphy spent countless hours the past year on the campaign trail, and we all owe Rick and his campaign team a big thank you for their efforts to better our Association.  For more election coverage,

Some Helpful Info for Hurricane Matthew

Carolinas PGA Professionals:

Our thoughts are with all of those affected by Hurricane Matthew as this storm moves in this weekend.

For those bracing for Matthew, we’ve made some
helpful information available regarding golf course preparedness – a plan produced by Ron Hickman, PGA, post Hurricane Katrina. We share this now in hopes that it may help those PGA Professionals in the path of Hurricane Matthew as it makes landfall.

Additionally, PGA Members who are impacted and may suffer personal loss, for which they will have un-reimbursed out of pocket expenses, the PGA Disaster Relief Fund may be able to provide assistance. Please contact the PGA Headquarters Membership Department at 800-474-2776 if you need more information.

Best of luck to all during this sensitive time,

Carolinas PGA Section HQ
