Schneider Holds Early Lead

The 64th Annual South Carolina Open Presented by Yamaha Golf Cars is off to a swinging start!  The 36-hole stroke play tournament, also sponsored by Hargray Communications, South State Bank, Global Golf Sales, and Your LeaderBoard, kicked off on the Cotton Dike course at Dataw Island Club in Beaufort, SC early Wednesday, April 22.  Competitors were provided with fast and smooth putting greens.  Afternoon breezes kicked up and provided an extra challenge.

Taking the lead today is Cory Schneider, PGA Golf Instructor from the Pointe Golf Club in  Powells Point, NC, who claimed an first round score of 33-35=68 (-4).  He made five impressive birdies and 12 pars.  Trailing in second place is Brian Joyce, PGA Head Professional at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, NC, with a round of 33-36=69 (-3).

The 64th SC Open is an official CPGA Bob Boyd Player of the Year Presented by Omega points event and one of the most highly anticipated CPGA events of the season.  We look forward to another exciting day on the course tomorrow at Dataw Island Club to see who will earn the top spot as Champion.

Event Updates from HQ

TAKING PLACE: The CPGA District 10 Meeting, led by District 10 Director, Rick Murphy, is in progress today and tomorrow at Pity's Sake Lodge in China Grove, NC!

POSTPONEDOld North State CPGA Senior Open

Due to unfavorable playing conditions, the decision has been made to postpone and reschedule the Old North State CPGA Senior Open. We apologize very much for the timing of this news, however, the following factors have led us to this decision:

1.   The weather forecast for Monday includes 80% chance of showers beginning late in the day Monday, continuing through Monday night, with 100% chance of rain all day Tuesday.

2.   The condition of the golf course is unfortunately not where McConnell Golf, Old North State Club, and the Carolinas PGA would like it to be to showcase to our members and guests.

We feel these factors would not give this event as much value as it should. Again, we realize the timing of this decision is not ideal and do apologize for that.

The tournament IS going to be rescheduled for July 20-21, 2015.

Thank you everyone for your understanding and cooperation with this decision. For further information regarding this event, please visit /Tournaments/tournament/6212/

Last Call for 64th South Carolina Open Players

This year's South Carolina Open takes place April 22-23 (*this event falls two months earlier than last year). This is a reminder to register for the 64th South Carolina Open Presented by Yamaha Golf Cars.  Scenic Dataw Island Club and its Cotton Dike course will play host.  The course was renovated in 2011, and in late April, the weather in the Lowcountry should hopefully be perfect.

This year, the tournament is 36-holes over two days.  The third round was eliminated in the hopes that more people can get away for two days of fun competition than can for three.

**The deadline to register is this Thursday, April 9 at 5:00 PM.**

We look forward to seeing you there!

21st Tar Heel Cup Matches finish in a draw

The 21st Tar Heel Cup Matches finished in a draw after two days of play at River Landing Country Club in Wallace, NC.

Two teams of the best playing amateurs and PGA Professionals from North Carolina met to conduct these friendly annual matches.

With each match worth one point, the PGA Professionals jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first day's four-ball matches.  However, the amateurs battled hard to win five of the eight singles matches the next day.

It takes 6½ points to win the cup outright.  Since the matches finished in a 6-6 tie, the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) will retain the cup until next year.  The Professionals' all time record is now 13 wins, 5 losses, and 3 ties; however, the amateurs are on a six-year unbeaten streak.

Both the Carolinas PGA Section (CPGA) and the CGA extend their sincere thanks to the members and staff of River Landing for their incredible hospitality.

Blackburn Claims Win at CPGA Head Professional Championship

Brooks Blackburn, PGA, of Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, SC claimed a stellar win at the Carolinas PGA Head Professional Championship Supported by Sun Mountain this week at Berkeley Hall Club in Bluffton, SC.  Blackburn posted a total score of 72-68=140 (-4).

Facing unfavorable weather conditions during the first round, Blackburn managed a solid score of 72 (E).  Round two started off similarly with an even par front nine of 36 including two birdies and two bogeys.  Blackburn's game came through on the back nine.  He sank four birdies and the rest pars to earn the two-stroke win.

"I had a great pairing with Cory and Eerik," said Blackburn. "Cory and I both got off to good starts with birdies at 10 and 11. We definitely stayed loose thinking we were playing for second or third place. A couple more birdies on the back side and it was just enough. The course while wet, was absolutely fantastic."

Blackburn takes home a prize of $1,720, while Rick Lewallen, PGA, and Cory Schneider, PGA, tied for second.
