2017 Carolinas Section Area III Meeting

It was a beautiful day at Osprey Point Golf Course - Kiawah Island for the 2017 Carolinas PGA Global Golf Sales Area III Meeting and Golf Challenge Presented by Bionic Glove, PGA Tour, PXG & Source4.  The team of Mark Tomedolskey (Cherokee Plantation) and Tom Logue (Moss Creek GC) won after carding an impressive score of 25 points in this modified stableford scoring event to capture the Area Challenge Championship.

 

Area III Professionals gathered for fellowship and education, highlighted by a board update from Vice President Paige Cribb and an engaging player development presentation by CPGA Teaching & Coaching Committee Member & Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton, PGA from Berkeley Hall Club.  A special thank you to Area III Director Josh Wagaman for administering the meeting and Head PGA Professional Ric Ferguson and the Osprey Point staff for hosting the event.

2017 HHIPGA March Pro-Pro

The HHIPGA held its second event of the year at Port Royal Golf Club.  The Pro – Pro event was conducted on the Robbers Row Course.  A special thanks to HHIPGA Vice President, Ben Smith, and his entire team for the outstanding service and great hospitality at Port Royal.  Charles Fox, Head Professional at Berkeley Hall Club, and his partner Jason Heintschel, Assistant Professional at Long Cove Club, carded an 8-under par 64 to win by 3 shots.  The event was close until Jason and Charles recorded and eagle 2 on the Par 4 16th hole.  Below is a picture of our Champions.  Charles Fox is pictured left and Jason Heintschel on the right.  We wish everyone a great spring golf season!

We kicked off a great 2017 tournament season at the Ocean Course!  What a great way to begin our year with fantastic weather and a wonderful turnout of 20 teams.  Special thanks to Stephen Younger, Head Golf Professional, and his entire team for hosting our event and treating us to 5 star service and hospitality.  Congratulations to our Champions Matt Bova (Secession Golf Club) and Dylan Thew (Kiawah – Cassique) on posting an 8 under 64 and claiming victory by two shots.  Pictured below are our Champions  Dylan (left) and Matt (right).

CPGA Member Jeff Crittenden Finishes 2nd
at RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships

  Jeff Crittenden, a Carolinas PGA Member and Director of Instruction at North Carolina Golf Academy, finished second at the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship.  "Critter" and Jeff Flagg of Pelham, Alabama both hit drives of just over 365 yards.  The distances were so close that officials had to pull out the tape measure.  Flagg's drive finished only 13" ahead to earn the winner-take-all prize of $250,000. "I am still amazed that I made it into the final eight," said Crittenden. "This has been a dream of mine for the last eight years. I feel very honored to be a part of this great group of hitters." The 72-hole championship ran Oct. 2 - Nov. 2 on PGA GC's Wanamaker Course for the 19th consecutive year.  The field was cut to the low 70 players and ties following the second round of play. CPGA Member Brad Clayton Finishes 3rd
in ParaLong Drive Worlds

  Brad Clayton, PGA, finished third in the One-Arm Assisted Division of the Mesquite, NV ParaLong Drive Worlds.  He qualified for the semi-finals with only one-round of hitting with a drive of 271 yards and was seeded third.  Even though he had the second longest hit of the semis, he was paired up in a match play battle with Lucian Newman who edged Brad by two yards 281 to 279, knocking him out of the championship round.  John Rogers ended up winning the One-Arm Assisted title with a drive of 285 yards. Chip King Elected to CPGA Hall of Fame

The Carolinas PGA Section’s Hall of Fame is an exclusive group of the finest PGA Professionals and other leaders in golf who have called the Carolinas home.  The PGA of America lists 37 characteristics of PGA Professionals including being a motivator, community leader, business manager, accomplished player, trained instructor, counselor, and friend.  The Section’s Hall of Fame members have displayed these traits such as these over the span of their lives and careers to the benefit of their community and the game of golf at large.  These individuals have positively impacted countless individuals through professional and personal relationships.  Chip King, the PGA Director of Golf at Grandfather Golf & Country Club in Linville, NC will be the 45th member of the CPGA Hall of Fame.   View More...

Haas Wins CPGA Professional Championship Wire-to-Wire

>>> Recap & complete results (Durham, NC) – Jerry Haas, PGA, the Men’s Golf Coach at Wake Forest University, won the 2014 Carolinas PGA Professional Championship held at Duke University Golf Club in Durham, NC. After rounds of 67-72=139 (-5), Haas entered the final round with a two-stroke lead over three others.  He may have felt some pressure on the first few holes by making three straight bogeys.  However, Haas righted the ship reeling off three birdies out of the next four holes.  He played level par for the rest of his round to finish the championship with a 37-35=72 (E) to total 211 (-5).         View More...

Patriot Golf Day

On Labor Day weekend, golfers across the country were asked to add an extra dollar to their greens fees to fund Folds of Honor scholarships.  Many golf facilities around the country went far beyond that.  The Patriot Golf Day campaign is jointly supported by The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association.  In the last seven years, golfers nationwide have been instrumental in raising donations through Patriot Golf Day events, resulting in over 7,500 scholarships in all 50 states and 41 PGA sections. Club Car CPGA Pro-Official Championship

PGA Head Professional Charles Frost and Club Owner Chris Randolph from Kiawah Island Club - River Course won the Club Car CPGA Pro-Official Championship by way of a chip-off.  They finished tied at 64 (-7) with PGA Director of Golf T.J. Bridges and Club President Doug Cullen from River Hills CC. Amateur Casey Smith Wins in First Senior Appearance

In his first ever CPGA senior tournament appearance, amateur Casey Smith won the 2014 Yeamans Hall CPGA Senior Open held at the renowned Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston, SC on Tuesday & Wednesday, August 26-27, 2014.     Wake Forest University Men's Golf Coach Jerry Haas, PGA, won the professional division of the CPGA Senior Championships held at Cape Fear National in Leland, NC. Haas, along with 6 other CPGA Professionals, qualified to compete in the 26th Senior PGA Professional National Championship in November at PGA Golf Club. CPGA Member Jerry Haas Competes at US Senior Open

Carolinas PGA Member and golf coach at Wake Forest University Jerry Haas, PGA was in the field and made the cut at the 2014 US Senior Open. With rounds of 78-71-74-69 for a total of 292 (+8), Haas finished in a tie for 33rd place. The tournament was held at Oak Tree National in Edmond, Oklahoma. Haas made it through qualifying for the championship at Florence Country Club in Florence, SC with a score of 68. Oak Tree National is a familiar place to Haas, as he made it to the semifinals of the US Amateur there in 1984. For the second time since he turned 50 last September, Jerry competed with his brother Jay Haas, who is second on the Champions Tour money list this year. CPGA Pro-Assistant Championship

The team of Larry George, PGA and Jeff Hale, PGA have captured the 2014 Carolinas PGA Pro-Assistant Championship.Presented by Greg Norman and Dunning Golf. George and Hale, both PGA Professionals at the host club of the tournament, River Landing Country Club in Wallace, NC, successfully defended their title as 2013 CPGA Pro-Assistant Champions. The format for the tournament consists of two rounds of four-ball stroke play where two competitors play as partners, each playing his/her own ball.  The lower score of the two partners is the score for the hole. George and Hale put together two rounds filled with birdies for a 17-under par total of 62-67=127 to win the tournament by two strokes. Giving the defending champions a scare after posting their second-round 62 were Mike Cato, PGA (Bradford Creek Golf Club in Greenville, NC) with Rohan Allwood (Woodlands CC in Columbia, SC). Cato and Allwood finished with 67-62=129 for second place. Stamey Wins the 50th Toshiba / SignArt North Carolina Open

Runner-up Jake McGlone (R) congratulates Champion Nathan Stamey (L) after the winning putt. Nathan Stamey won the 50th Toshiba / SignArt North Carolina Open held at The Club at Irish Creek.  Stamey defeated amateur Jake McGlone of Charlotte, NC in a one-hole playoff to claim the championship. Stamey, a PGA Apprentice Assistant Professional from Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, SC, came into the final round with a two-stroke lead. He played a solid round of 70 (-1) today to bring his tournament winning total to 67-66-70=203 (-10). 90th Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T

Steve Larick the Apprentice Head PGA Professional at Golden Hills Golf & Country Club survived a three hole playoff to win the 90th Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T. Larick, along with Scott Harvey, an amateur from Greensboro, N.C., finished the tournament tied at 208 (-5). It took three trips down the par-4 18th hole on the Champions Course at Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center for Larick to  claim victory. Larick started the final round with the lead after a strong performance in the second round. After making a few bogeys to start off the back nine, he held on through the stretch making a birdie on 16 to tie Harvey, and eventually lead to the playoff.  Larick carded rounds of 70-66-72 = 208 (-5). “I was making everything yesterday, when I shot my 66, and today I was not having the same luck, but that’s the story of golf” said Larick after the playoff. “I made a few shots down the stretch and managed to not have a single three-putt during the whole tournament.” Final Recap / Leaderboard View More...

Clarke Cockman Sinks a Hole-in-one on the Great Shot Golf $5,000 Par-3 Hole

Clarke Cockman an amateur from Cary, NC made a hole-in-one on the Great Shot Golf designated par-3 challenge hole, the 167-yard #7.  Cockman struck his shot to the top of a slope behind the hole and watched his ball rolled back on the perfect line to fall into the hole for his first career hole-in-one.  He will receive at $5,000 cash prize from Great Shot Golf which is permissible under the USGA’s Rules of Amateur Status.  View More...

Carolinas PGA Section Kicks off 90th Carolinas Open Presented by BB&T with Carolinas Open Pro-Am

Browns Summit, N.C. (May 5, 2014) - The Carolinas PGA Section is hosting the 90th Carolinas Open, presented by BB&T, this week at Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center. This is the third year in a row the event has been held at Bryan Park since the Association relocated their headquarters to the site. The Carolinas Open Pro-Am, benefitting the First Tee of the Triad was held on Monday, May 5th, and raised $2,500 for the organization.  First Tee of the Triad volunteer coaches were paired with Carolinas PGA Professionals for a fun day out on the Champions Course at Bryan Park.  The winning team was made up of Mike Hilleboe, David Ross, Scott Heffernan, and Carolinas PGA Professional Jeff Hale, PGA. Black Gets Assistants' Association Win at Greensboro CC

Aaron Black, PGA apprentice professional at Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe, NC, won the Assistants' Association Stroke Play event Monday held at Greensboro Country Club's Irving Park course in Greensboro, NC. Black carded a 2-under par 69 and was the only player in the field under par. Coming in second place was Quail Hollow Club's Andrew Bryce, PGA with a 72. The tournament had 34 players and was supported by The Golf Shop of Wake Forest.
